Air Conditioning and Heating Tips
Here are a few tips that can save you time and money regarding your air conditioning and heating equipment.
Breaker – If your air conditioner is not working, check the breaker. If the breaker has been tripped, flip it back on. IF your air conditioner starts working again, you may have saved some money. If the AC equipment stops working because the breaker has tripped again, it is time to call for service.
Filter – It is absolutely essential that you keep a clean air conditioning filter. This is the most important thing a homeowner can do to protect the air conditioning equipment. If the filter gets clogged up with dirt, it will not allow for proper air flow. Without air flow, there is no way the home can be cooled efficiently. If you don’t regularly change your air conditioning filters, eventually you will have a dirty evaporator coil. A dirty evaporator coil will lead to an expensive repair if the evaporator coil needs to be removed to be cleaned. Another problem that can be encountered with a clogged air filter is with the heating system. Not only will your heating not operate efficiently, but it can cause the high limit switch to shut off the furnace because it is too hot. If your furnace shuts off, you should check your air filter. If it’s dirty, change it and see if the furnace comes back on.
Pets – If you have pets, be sure to change your filters even more often as hair can clog your air conditioning filters really fast. Don’t put your pet’s beds in front of the air conditioning return grill. If you have dogs, take precautions so that they do not chew the low voltage thermostat wire. This is especially true if you have a puppy. If you have male dogs give them a few places to relieve themselves, so they won’t do that on the air conditioning condenser.
Shade – Having your outside air conditioning condenser in the shade will help it run more efficiently. Air conditioners move heat. They move heat from the inside of your home to the outside of your home. With the outside shaded, your AC equipment will not have to work as hard. Consider planting a tree to block the afternoon sun. You can also install lattice or something similar. If you do so, be sure it is far enough away from your equipment so you will not block air flow. This also includes planting bushes. Do not plant bushes close to your air conditioning equipment as they too will block the needed air flow.
AC condenser – Just as it is important change your air conditioning filter to keep your inside evaporator coil clean, you should also take measures to keep the outside condenser coil clean. During the summer months when the equipment is being used, the condenser coils should be washed once a month or so to keep the system running efficiently. Before you grab a hose and start washing you should let your air conditioning technician show you how the first time. Condensers have different types of fins to disperse the heat. They are easily damaged if they are not properly washed and the repair is extremely expensive.
Energy Efficiency Tips for Summer
As the weather starts to heat up and we get entrenched in the summer months, people begin to crank up their air conditioners to bring some welcome relief into their homes. However, energy efficiency is an important part of your daily routine so that you can lessen the impact on the environment and keep your electricity bill from skyrocketing. Keeping a few tips in mind will help you achieve these efficiency goals. Make sure that your air conditioner is located in the shade. Doing so will ensure that air conditioning system will not have to work as hard and will operate much more efficiently. During the summer, it is important to wash condenser coils periodically and clean or change your air filters when needed so that your system can work properly under harsher conditions. If you have an attic, consider installing a whole house fan that will draw in cool air through the windows and dispel hot air through attic vents. Additionally, you can have your air ducts checked and have any leaks repaired early in the season. This will save wear and tear on your air conditioner and reduce your utility bill all season long. The air conditioner is not the only thing in your home that can run more efficiently this summer. What you do in the kitchen can have a huge impact. By filling your refrigerator, you keep it from heating up too fast when the door is open. This means that it does not need to work overtime in order to keep things cool. Also using your microwave to prepare meals will use two-thirds less energy than your stove as well. In the end, there are numerous steps that you can take to increase the efficiency of your home this summer.
